A special online version of “Maciunas Laughter (Choir Edition)” dedicated to and performed by Fluxus artists. This performance of collective laughter is an alteration of its initial version that took place at MoMA (at the premier screening of Jeff Perkins movie “George: The Story of George Maciunas and Fluxus”). Later the piece was performed also at the Emily Harvey Foundation or The EYE Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, among others. * * * “Fluxus was a joke!” – said George Maciunas (central coordinator of Fluxus - from 1962 until his death in 1978). His unusual sense of irony also characterizes many Fluxus’ works. Laughter is a conceptual exercise, our unconscious performance, “an opening in which self unfolds”, and thus a way to evoke personality. It’s not something we learn, like speaking for example - it’s already embedded in our identities. It is an atavistic feature between the human and animal world, both gesture, and language. For Maciunas laughing was the only form of human expression that transforms the whole body into ”corporeal concretism”. Maciunas was a complex man, who remains enigmatic and mythic. I decided to learn his laughter (to adapt it to my own rather than to mimic it) as I found it to be his most constant feature - a part of his character that hasn’t changed despite all of his – not always easy - life events. ‘Storing’ his laughter in my body, I can now hand it down and share it with other people, as laughter never appears as a singular act but always as multiplicity, and communicates what cannot be said with words. Thus, laughing together becomes a social practice, but also, a musical and spiritual experience. Also in the current unstable socio-political situation in the world, laughter can be a way to relieve anxiety and frustration, including those related to the current state of culture and art.
