By mapping the human shortcomings (literally) onto the plant species this painting seeks to be both absurd, funny and to the point. Not only the smaller part of the plant scolds the larger part of it to grow upwards but the viewer gets a telling too simply by their proximity. Oh Grow Up! Is something you say to someone acting childish and immature as though they should know better and act like an adult. Funny that small part of us that knows we should know better.
